In 1999 the City of Scandicci ordered, through its division of Parks and Quality of Urban Life, a series of studies regarding the possible functional restoration of the castle and its constituent structures.
The Department of Restoration of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Florence, in collaboration with the City of Scandicci, performed a feasibility study of the restoration of the castle.
The interdisciplinary group, coordinated by Professor Daniela Lamberini, concluded its work on the 23rd of October, 2000, and the results of their research were published by Edifir under the title "Il Castello dell' Acciaiolo a Scandicci".
After a public request for bids, the restoration project was awarded to a provisional consortium of professionals under the leadership of the studio Gurrieri - De Vita - Gurrieri.
The project plans were approved by the Superintendent of the Environment and Architecture of Firenze, and work was divided into three parts.
The first phase was conducted from 04/30/2002 through 10/30/2003. A total EUR 2,330,054.29 was awarded to the provisional consortium consisting of the firms Monacelli and Ikuvium. This phase consisted of the consolidation of the castle structure, the roof, building foundations, the villa, and the exterior walls.
The second phase of restoration was planned for 11/10/2003 through 07/31/2005 at a cost of EUR 1,720,774.80 to be awarded to the provisional consortium consisting of the firms CA.RE.CA, Gentilli SNC, and Belli SRL. This phase is currently underway, and consists of the restoration of the interior of the factory buildings, additions to the plant design, and restoration of miscellaneous building elements.
The third phase, whose contract is yet to be awarded, is projected to cost around EUR 1,000,000. The work to be executed includes the completion of the inner courtyard and the restoration of the garden.
