In 2000 the administration of the municipality of Scandici solicited,
at the European level, the submission of ideas for the restoration and new construction of the urban complex of Piazza Matteotti.
The call for ideas, denoted "Bit City", was carried out on-line and transmitted via the Internet to participants that included professionals, students, artists, and other interested parties.
The designer of the new piazza Matteotti who won the competition for ideas in 2000 is the young architect Sandro Bonannini.
Fifty-four responses to the call for ideas were received from all over the world.
The proposals were evaluated by a commission headed by Mayor Giovanni Doddoli and composed of superintendent Mario Lolli Chetti, instructor of Contemporary Architectural History Gianni Pettena, Raffaella Saraconi of the Professional order of Architects, Francesco Vacca of the Professional order of Architects, the president of Scandicci Cultura, Sergio Staino, the architect and director of parks and quality of urban life for the city of Scandicci, Andrea Martellacci, and Temistocle Antoniadis, fashion designer for Gucci spa. «
