In the heart of nineteenth-century Scandicci is Piazza Matteoti, which dominates the old city center. Here, in fact, was settled the community of Casellina e Torri during the initial baby-boom and urbanization resulting from the transfer of the Italian capital to Florence.
Before that the provisional seat of the municipality was Villa Poccianti. Afterward, the same family Poccianti donated the neccessary materials to construct the new villa. The building, designed by Francesco Martelli, was completed in 1870.
Of sober architecture typical of the nineteenth century, the building is characterized in front by its open arcade. An open arch in the center of the back wall of the arcade allows passage to the rear of the building, which opens onto Piazza Piave. In front of the building is a monument erected in 1926 to honor the fallen of World War I.
Currently the villa houses the Scandicci municipal library. «
